Blue Springs Mo.— It’s never too early to learn about healthy hearts. Kansas City Cardiology and St. Mary’s Medical Center are again hosting children’s education program, “Your Healthy Heart”. The week-long program teaches 5th grade students about the heart, and how to protect it.
The highlight of the week is a field trip to St. Mary’s Medical Center on Friday, February 12, 9:30 a.m.-noon, where the students get some “hands on” experience visiting various interactive stations throughout the hospital. This year, William-Bryant Elementary was selected for the program. This is the 16th year for the event, with 75 students participating.
The students will learn about echocardiograms, cardiac rehabilitation, examine heart anatomy, observe pacemaker devices and the ever-popular cooking and snack demonstrations. In the days preceding the field trip, nurses and other health professionals visit the classrooms to teach the students about the anatomy of the heart, risk factors for developing heart disease and how to reduce those risks.
