This usually happens because one or more of the heart's arteries (blood vessels that supply blood to the heart muscle) is narrowed or blocked. Insufficient blood supply is called ischemia.

This means assessing your risk factors and working to keep them low. For those over 40, or those with multiple risk factors, it's important to calculate the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years. Many first-ever heart attacks or strokes are fatal or disabling, so prevention is critical. The sooner you begin comprehensive risk reduction, the longer and stronger your heart will beat.
- [Renal Artery Repair](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/interventional-services/renal-artery-repair/): Narrowing of the renal arteries by atherosclerosis or other reasons is an important cause of hypertension and kidney failure. While traditional surgical methods are sometimes used to treat this condition, a newer, less invasive procedure called renal artery stenting has become the most common treatment. Renal artery stenting is done by threading a tiny, balloon-tipped catheter through the groin to the site of the arterial narrowing. The balloon is expanded to enlarge the artery, and a stent (a small, balloon-expandable metal tube) or “scaffold” is put in place to optimize the angioplasty result and minimize recurrences.

When they don’t, the hole is called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). It is one form of atrial septal defect closure, and can now be corrected with less invasive methods than traditional surgery.

Stents can also keep an artery open that was torn or injured during angioplasty, and decreases the chance of recurrence of the blockage (restenosis) by nearly 50 percent.

Stents help keep the carotid arteries open after they’re widened with angioplasty. During the angioplasty procedure, a carotid stent (a small, metal mesh tube) is placed inside the carotid artery at the site of the blockage, keeping the artery open. The stent stays in place permanently and acts as a scaffold to support the artery. After several weeks, the artery heals around the stent.

The usually occur at night or first thing in the morning. An Ischemic stroke occurs when blood vessels to the brain become narrowed or clogged, cutting off blood flow to brain cells. The most important risk factor for ischemic stroke that you can control is high blood pressure.

Hemorrhagic strokes are different from ischemic strokes in many ways. The fatality rate is higher and overall prognosis poorer for those who’ve had hemorrhagic strokes. Symptoms appear suddenly and is often associated with a very severe headache, nausea and vomiting.

- [Coronary CT](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/imaging-and-diagnostic-testing/coronary-ct/): St. Mary's Heart Center's Coronary CT Scanner provides ultra clear visualizations of the heart and coronary arteries. Our CT offers different and unique information from angiography. It not only determines the severity of blockages, but it also directly visualizes the atherosclerotic plaque deposited in the vessel wall. It can identify the early stages of soft (fatty and fibrous) plaque formation even before it can be detected on x-ray angiography images. It also visualizes calcified plaque, which occurs frequently in chronic coronary artery disease.
- [Carotid Doppler](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/imaging-and-diagnostic-testing/carotid-doppler/): The Carotid Doppler exam uses sound frequency, in a range that is higher than human beings are able to hear, to produce images of the carotid arteries in the neck on a viewing screen. Carotid Doppler studies are used to identify blocked or reduced blood flow in the arteries of the neck that could cause stroke. This test is also used to evaluate symptoms of dizziness, vision changes and loss of balance that may be caused by impeded or restricted blood flow through these vessels.
- [Cardiac-Specific PET scan](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/imaging-and-diagnostic-testing/cardiac-specific-pet-scan/): Heart disease is the number-one killer of men and women in the United States, making early detection critical for timely and proper cardiac treatment.
- [Angiography](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/imaging-and-diagnostic-testing/angiography/): Angiography is term for a range of X-ray tests used to detect and diagnose diseases of the blood vessels, such as weakening of the vessel walls, the narrowing or blocking of vessels, and to examine the chambers of the heart. A very small tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel in your groin or arm. The tip of the tube is positioned either in the heart or at the beginning of the arteries supplying the heart, and a special fluid (called a contrast medium or dye) is injected. The X-ray is taken after the vessels have been injected with a substance (dye) that allows them to be seen on film. The pictures that are obtained are called angiograms.

- [Hyperbaric Medicine](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/hyperbaric-medicine/): After an initial consultation and examination at the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, you will be ready to begin your therapy. When you arrive, you will receive complete instructions regarding your treatment. Before starting, you will change into a 100% cotton garment provided by the center. For safety reasons, no other clothing may be worn inside the hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

With each beat of the heart an electrical impulse, or “wave,” travels through the heart. The wave causes the heart muscles to squeeze and pump blood from the heart to the body.

- [Echocardiography](https://stmaryskc.com/our-services/imaging-and-diagnostic-testing/echocardiography/): An ultrasound technique in which a probe, about as large as a pinky finger, is placed in the esophagus to "look" at the heart from behind. Transesophageal echocardiography is much more sensitive than transthoracic (across the chest) echocardiography, as overlying structures (bone and lungs) do not obscure the view. This technique requires sedation in almost all cases.

During this test, the patient lies flat on a table designed tilt. The patient is tilted upright at an angle, with the head always above the feet. Patients are not tilted upside down. As the patient is tilted toward the upright position, an electrocardiogram (ECG) records the heart’s electrical activity. In some patients, this simple maneuver will reveal abnormal cardiovascular reflexes that produce syncope.
