Coronary Angioplasty

Coronary angioplasty is a procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. In this minimally-invasive procedure, balloon is used to open the artery that has been narrowed by a build up of plaque and placing and inflating a tiny balloon at the blockage to widen the space.

Angioplasty is often combined with placing a small wire mesh tube called a stent to help keep the artery open.

Angioplasty may be used to:

  • Improve symptoms of coronary artery disease such as angina and shortness of breath.
  • Reduce damage to the heart muscle from a heart attack.
  • Reduce the risk of death in some patients.
